How-To-Guide: Cerumen Removal.

Updated: Oct 24, 2023

To safely soften and remove earwax at home, you can try these methods:

1. Over-the-Counter Ear Drops: Use over-the-counter ear drops to soften the wax. Follow the instructions on the product.

2. Warm Water Rinse: Tilt your head and use a bulb syringe to gently squirt warm (body temperature) water into your ear. Let it sit for a minute and then drain it out.

3. Hydrogen Peroxide: Mix equal parts of hydrogen peroxide and water, and put a few drops in your ear. Let it sit for a few minutes, then tilt your head to drain it.

4. Olive Oil or Mineral Oil: Warm some olive oil or mineral oil and put a few drops in your ear. Let it sit for several minutes, then tilt your head to let it drain.

5. Earwax Removal Kits: These kits often include ear drops and a bulb syringe for irrigation. Follow the kit’s instructions.

6. Cotton Swabs (with caution): You can use cotton swabs to clean the outer ear but avoid inserting them into the ear canal as it can push wax deeper.

If your earwax blockage does not feel resolved, or you are starting to have any discomfort (this process should never be painful), it’s important to consult a healthcare professional, who can safely remove the earwax for you.

Avoid using objects like bobby pins or sharp implements, as they can damage the ear canal or eardrum. Never try to remove earwax if you have a history of ear problems or ear surgery, as this should be done by a healthcare provider.
